We are pleased and excited to offer you a comprehensive, educational, fun and competitive flag football program. Together with the NFL, we hope to provide each child with quality program that delivers an enjoyable flag football experience each season. Here is some information designed to prepare you to participate in our league. Our Staff: Our League Directors and staff of trained officials led by Mike Lopez, Dante Giulidibari Shelley Isley and Raymond Woodie Combined, we have over 80 years of flag football experience with 4-Man, 5-Man, 6-Man, 7-Man and 8-Man flag football leagues of every style imaginable. We each bring unique skills to the table making us one of the strongest flag football organizations in the state. Our Philosophy: Our philosophy is simple; it’s all about the kids! We want them to be safe, to develop their football skills, develop life skills and have fun. Our directors, coaches, trainers and officials will be focused on ensuring safety throughout league play, instructing our players in effective football techniques and assist them in overcoming adversity as every game will inevitably have a winner and a loser. While we provide competitive environment for the kids to play in, in the end we want every child to be a winner! Parents and fans are encouraged to do all they can to support this goal. The GAME: NFL Flag is a 5-on-5 No-Contact game that relies mainly on passing with some running. There is no blocking allowed at any time. A coin toss is used to determine first possession and then the fun begins. Each team starts on their own 5-Yard line except in the case of an interception. They have three plays to reach the midfield line-to-gain and then three more to score. At halftime, teams switch ends of the field and start over. Coaches are required to make sure every child has equal playing time, but we will not dictate where they play. Our officials will be focused on ensuring safety and that games move along smoothly. Games: Each game runs approximately 45 minutes and consists of two 20-minute halves with a two-minute intermission. Each game will be preceded by a 45-minute session that includes warm up drills, agility drills, skills development and a limited team practice. The entire game and practice session runs approximately 90 minutes. Players should be at the field at least 15 minutes in advance of their session start time, not game start time. These are the ONLY required sessions for each player. Teams may choose to hold additional team practices on their own time. Of course, players may miss time for family and school commitments without penalty. Skills Development: We have a training curriculum designed to help players at any level get better. Areas such as agility pass routes, stance, positioning, defensive coverage and passing will be covered in progressively more complex ways each week. Players will spend time before every game honing their football skills while learning to work within a football system. Rules: We will be using the NFL FLAG rule set including field dimensions, penalties and game clock. South Bay Rulebooks outlining all the league details will be available at the beginning of the season. Location: South Bay Football operates locations around San Jose and the surrounding communities. Each location operates as an independent league. Field locations for each program are announced at the beginning of the season. Field: Each field is 30 yards by 70 yards. They consist of two 10-yard end zones and two 25-yard halves with one line-to-gain in the center of the field. 5-Yard No Run Zones are located in front of the line-to-gain and each goal line. Big Time Feel: We provide a big time feel to our league. Games will be video taped and posted on our web site. Photos will be taken and posted as well. Game scores and standings will be updated weekly following the games. Each player gets to keep their jersey and the winning teams will receive further recognition at our Awards Ceremony. Our intent is to make the experience complete. In closing, we hope you will enjoy your time with us. Please contact us at any time with questions, comments or suggestions. Thank you for your patronage. Sincerely President, Mike Lopez
